Depaul International is a UK registered homelessness charity. Her Grace, The Duchess of Norfolk is its Patron. Depaul International is supported by wonderful Ambassadors, including Lady Forte.
Depaul started its work in 1989 in response to the growing number of young homeless people on the streets of London. 2019 marks Depaul’s 30th anniversary. Since then, the Depaul Internationally has grown to support over 19,500 individuals of all ages each year across seven countries. Our approach is tailored to the people, communities and the diverse issues in each country, with our services ranging from providing safe shelter, accommodation, food and health services to helping people affected by homelessness to receive the education, employment and social support they need.
In 2002, Depaul began expanding internationally, starting in Ireland. Two years later, Depaul International was formed to be the parent organisation to the burgeoning global group – with the aim of tackling homelessness at a worldwide level. Depaul Slovakia was registered in 2006, Depaul Ukraine followed the year after. Depaul USA and Depaul France joined our Family in 2008 and 2013. Our latest addition is Depaul Croatia which was launched in 2018.
In addition to our frontline work, Depaul International’s Group CEO, Mark McGreevy OBE, set up our think tank, the Institute of Global Homelessness, in 2014.
The Institute is developing a global strategy to end street homelessness. It has already brought the issue to the forefront at the UN’s Habitat III conference on sustainable housing in 2015, has composed the first global definition of homelessness, and is now leading an ambitious and innovative campaign to end street homelessness in 150 cities worldwide by 2030.
Depaul International, and each member of the Depaul Group, owes its inspiration and its values to Vincent de Paul, a major social reformer in 17thCentury France. Vincent de Paul reached out to the poor and the disenfranchised, valuing each and every person. Vincentian Values are at the heart of the work of the Depaul Group and all its national charities. These values include a commitment to help the poorest of the poor – and to place actions ahead of words.
Depaul International supports homeless and marginalised people around the world. Depaul operates through subsidiary charities in the UK, Ireland, Slovakia, Ukraine, USA, France and Croatia. Our aim is to work with the homeless and socially excluded improving health, enhancing quality of life and facilitating transitions to independent living. Our services provide urgent relief to people who often have no other means of support; men, women and children who have become homeless and are struggling to survive as well as individuals who have very acute needs.
We now manage over 80 different projects internationally providing shelter, food, medical care and a place of safety for over 19,500 individuals each year. We provide support through three areas of work:
Our work entails a range of services to maximise each person’s chances to lead a fulfilling life. We offer rights based advocacy, support clients with accommodation and transition housing, help people to find work or to gain the skills and education needed to access opportunities.
Depaul works in the spirit of St Vincent de Paul – a Vincentian approach focused on responding to need through action and innovation. We work inclusively with individuals from all walks of life, people of any faith or none, in a way that acknowledges the diversity and equality of opportunity for all. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has a place to call home and a chance to build a positive and fulfilling future.
Our vision: A society in which everyone has a place to call home and a stake in their community.
Our mission: To end homelessness and change the lives of those affected by it.
Our values: We celebrate the potential of people. We put our words into action. We aim to take a wider role in civil society. We believe in rights and responsibilities.
